Delco Democrat Shelly Chauncey Running For Congress in PA-7

Glen Mills Resident and Former CIA Counter-Intelligence Officer Shakes Up Field

Glen Mills, PA – Former Central Intelligence Agency Counter-Intelligence Officer and Glen Mills resident Shelly Chauncey today announced her candidacy for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District.  Shelly joins the race in the wake of St. Sen. Daylin Leach’s announcement last month that he was “taking a step back” from the campaign.

Shelly remarked, “When I look at Congress, I don't see a lot of people with life experiences similar to mine or a lot of people in our community. Congressman Meehan has been in politics for 27 years; I've never run for office before.  I'm running for Congress in the community where I've lived for years not because I see a political opportunity, but because I see it as a moral obligation.  I'm running because we aren't going to see real change in Washington unless we send different kinds of people there...people who don't drive a pick-up truck in a campaign ad, but who actually drive one in real life.  People who can speak to the experience most people have to the chaos they are creating in Washington.  That's why I'm running.”

Shelly specifically criticized Congressman Meehan’s vote last month for the Trump tax changes:  “Congressman Meehan could have given more to the middle class, but instead he gave most of the money to his campaign contributors and big corporations.  He’s lost touch with the people he should be representing.”

Shelly opened her campaign committee last week, prior to the New York Times blockbuster story revealing that Congressman Meehan secretly used taxpayer money to settle a sexual harassment claim while serving on the Ethics Committee.  In response to the allegations, Shelly said, “These disturbing allegations of harassment followed by a secret payout of taxpayer dollars are, sadly, business as usual in Washington.  It’s beyond dispute that Congressman Meehan hypocritically postured as a reformer on the sexual harassment process while authorizing a secret payout.  The people of our area deserve better than this.”

Shelly’s views on public service are shaped by her working-class background, national security experience, and dedicated role as a wife and mother. She does not come from a family of wealth, privilege, or political connections.  Like the people of Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, she has worked hard for everything she has, and understands that government needs to help where it must, stay out of the way where it can, and protect its citizens at all costs.

Shelly Chauncey grew up on a small family farm, the daughter of a prison guard and a teacher. Shelly worked 2 jobs – including as a waitress – to pay for college, graduating from Meredith College with a degree in Political Science.

After college, Shelly served her nation for more than a decade with the Central Intelligence Agency. She began her career as a secretary and worked her way up to become a counter-intelligence officer. Shelly served as an undercover officer with the CIA in Latin America, East Asia and throughout the United States, providing logistical and counter-intelligence support to operatives abroad.

She is a graduate of Drexel University’s Thomas R. Kline School of Law, and is currently a peer counselor and mental health ambassador in the legal profession. She is a cancer survivor and an advocate for children with special needs, having adopted a child from foster care with special needs.

Shelly lives in Glen Mills with her husband, three children, three dogs, two cats, and five chickens.
